In the 21st century, one of the most pressing challenges is ensuring the sustainability and competitiveness of agricultural and food production, while safeguarding consumer health, reducing environmental impacts, and addressing the urgent pressures of climate change. For land-based biological resources, special emphasis must be placed on low-input and organic food production systems, along with improved resource management, including the recycling and reuse of agro-food industry by-products and unexploited biomass streams.
Phosphorus is a strategic, irreplaceable element in both food crop and animal production. It is classified by the EU as a Critical Raw Material (EU COM(2017) 490), with the EU importing over 95% of its needs—many Member States are 100% dependent on imports. Most of these mineral phosphate sources are contaminated with Cadmium and Uranium, posing serious environmental and health risks.
The new EU Fertilising Products Regulation (EU 2019/1009), effective July 16, 2022, introduces strict safety standards, particularly around heavy metal content, which traditional mineral fertilisers often fail to meet under market-competitive conditions. Today, only two materials offer high P₂O₅ content (>30%):
- Phosphate rock, which is increasingly contaminated and globally depleted
- Animal Bone Char (ABC)- BioPhosphate, a natural, cadmium-free recovered phosphorus source.
Following a 700% phosphate price surge in 2008, further price volatility and resource scarcity are expected—making sustainable alternatives more critical than ever.
