ABC (Animal Bone Char) BioPhosphate - Key Characteristics

Phosphorus is a strategic, irreplaceable nutrient essential for both food crop and animal production in modern agriculture. Among materials with high P₂O₅ content (>35%), only two sources are known:

  • Apatite minerals from phosphate rock (often contaminated with Cadmium and Uranium), and

  • Bone Char, a natural, clean, bio-based apatite source.

However, low-contamination phosphate rock reserves are now globally depleted, heightening the urgency for sustainable alternatives.

The EU agri-food sector is increasingly affected by external pressures:

  • Climate change,

  • Soil degradation,

  • Loss of biodiversity, and

  • Economic shocks like COVID-19 and geopolitical conflicts, which have led to a 315% surge in phosphate rock prices (mid-2021 to 2023).

These challenges have exposed the sector’s vulnerability due to its heavy dependence on imported fertilisers and energy.

In response, the development and deployment of high-nutrient, safe, EU-origin phosphorus biofertilisers—such as ABC BioPhosphate—represent a crucial strategic solution. Recognised in the 2024 EU Critical Raw Materials Act (Regulation EU 2024/1252), phosphate is officially classified as a Critical Raw Material, reinforcing the urgent need for circular, resilient fertiliser alternatives.

ABC (Animal Bone Char) BioPhosphate is produced from food-grade bone meal (also known as bone grist), a mono feed material derived from animal by-products. These materials are rendered at 133°C for 20 minutes under 3 bar pressure, ensuring safe and high-quality processing. The outputs of this food-grade animal bone processing include: Bone meal/bone grist for the pet food industry, Gelatin for human food applications, China bone material for the high-end porcelain sector.

The 3R Pyrolysis Process uses bone grist from the  rendering industry—as a feedstock. This material undergoes high-temperature carbonisation, reaching up to 850°C at its core, which is significantly above typical biomass processing levels. This elevated temperature is crucial for ensuring the production of a high-quality, safe, and pure end product.

No chemicals are used at any stage. Through this advanced pyrolysis (a reductive thermal treatment), all volatile compounds and protein-based substances are completely removed from the mineral matrix. The result is a highly macro-porous and bioavailable mineral material, consisting of approximately 70–76% hydroxyapatite, 7–13% calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), and 9–11% elemental carbon—a unique apatite-type mineral ideal for agricultural and environmental applications.

The specific animal bone char carrier is ABC-BioPhosphate that contains high amount of Phosphorus expressed in P2O5 (35%) and Calcium (37%), which is after formulation is available for plants, that allows efficient, environmentally safe and naturally renewable phosphorus supply. Beside the highly available recovered phosphorus content the ABC animal bone char also contains other important recovered trace elements, and other nutrients, such as K and Mg.
The  toxic elements content of the ABC-BioPhosphate product approaches the range of non detectable levels.

The formulated ABC-BioPhosphate product serves as a carrier for beneficial soil microorganisms, which are naturally entrapped on both the internal and external surfaces of the material. Its application results in several positive agronomic effects, including plant growth promotion, natural fertilisation, and biopesticide activity.

By substituting chemical fertilisers with ABC-BioPhosphate, this innovation supports the EU Green Transition toward sustainable, circular, and resource-efficient food systems. It also contributes to the development of energy-independent, resilient, and fair agri-food systems that promote soil health and environmental protection.

A variety of 3R-specific ABC-BioPhosphate types are available, including user demand-driven formulations tailored to meet specific agronomic needs and application goals.

NINE REASONS

... why do you need

🔑 Why Phosphorus is the “Web of Life” and a Critical Concern for Global Food Security:

  1. Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient—the "web of life"—vital for crop production and animal farming.
👉 No Phosphorus = No Agriculture = No Food
  2. The EU imports >88% of its phosphate supply, mostly in mineral form, which contains toxic contaminants like Cadmium, Uranium, and other heavy metals.
  3. In 2024, Phosphate has been officially listed by the European Commission as a Critical Raw Material due to its high supply risk.
  4. 📈 Global food demand is rapidly increasing, which directly drives up the demand for phosphorus—a non-substitutable nutrient for agriculture.
  5. ⚠️ Finite phosphate resources:
    • Low-contaminant mineral phosphate reserves are already depleted.
    • What remains are highly contaminated reserves, posing health and environmental hazards.
  6. 🌍 Geopolitical vulnerability:
    • Only 5 countries control 88% of global phosphate rock reserves.
    • This creates a major national food security risk, especially for import-dependent regions like the EU.
  7. ♻️ System inefficiency:
    • A large portion of used phosphorus ends up in waste streams.
    • There is little to no recovery in the conventional agri-food system.
  8. 🧪 Cheap fertiliser is a thing of the past:
    • The era of low-cost, accessible phosphorus is over.
    • Farmers are facing rapid cost increases and supply uncertainties.
  9. 💥 Fertiliser crisis since 2022:
    • A >300% increase in phosphorus prices has been observed.
    • Driven by geopolitical instability, including supply disruptions, energy costs, and trade barriers.
